VMware announced View 5.1, plans to deliver seamless apps via PCoIP and full desktops via HTML5
[UPDATED MAY 4] Corrected info about how the View Storage Accelerator Works
Today VMware released the details of the next version of View, called version 5.1. (They also announced thatHorizon App Manager is available for on-premises deployments and that Octopus is available in public betaform. Jack Madden covered both of these stories on ConsumerizeIT.com today.)
In terms of major features, there's not a lot new for View 5.1. The main new thing is that vSphere's Content Based Read Cache is now available for View, (though with desktops they call it "View Storage Accelerator" (VSA) for some reason). Originally slated for View 5.0 and pulled at the last minute, View Storage Accelerator uses RAM on the VDI host to cache frequently used disk blocks. This provides better experience with fewer read operations going to the primary storage. [UPDATE] This cache is based on the content of the disk blocks, so if it finds any blocks that are the same, it can consolidate them in the cache. This means that in addition to being able to cache the "master" copies of Linked Clones, it can cache identical blocks from random personal VMDK desktop files. This is huge, and a topic I'll cover more in the future. [END UPDATE]
Anyway, VSA is probably the biggest new feature of View. They also announced that you can use View Persona for physical machines, but they stressed the main use case for this is for migrations from OSes or migrations to VDI. (The way Persona works today prevents a user from being logged into two desktops at once with it anyway, so it's not like Persona is getting anywhere near AppSense or RES yet.)
Finally, there's now a View desktop version of vCenter Operations. First announced at VMworld Europe last year, vCenter Operations for View does pretty much what you'd expect it to—real time monitoring and health checking of View environments. The new View version includes the ability to dig into PCoIP performance—something that's been a bit of a black box in the past.

Microsoft annonce un Patch Tuesday important en mai
Pour son Patch Tuesday du mois de mai, Microsoft a averti qu'il allait livrer sept mises à jour de sécurité, dont trois classées « critiques » et quatre jugées « importantes », pour corriger vingt-trois bugs dans Windows et Office, ainsi que sur les plateformes de développement Silverlight et .Net.
Avec vingt-trois correctifs, le Patch Tuesday que Microsoft livrera mardi prochain, 8 mai, est plus important que d'habitude pour un mois impair. Dans la notification avancée communiquée par l'éditeur, on dénombre trois bulletins dits « critiques » et quatre qualifiés d'« importants ». Pendant quelques temps, Microsoft a suivi un planning suivant lequel le nombre de mises à jour était plus important sur les mois pairs (tout en fournissant aussi, de façon régulière, des correctifs pour son navigateur web Internet Explorer). Et jusque-là, le nombre de correctifs livrés en mai était assez léger, fait notamment remarquer Andrew Storms, directeur des opérations de sécurité chez nCircle Security, qui suit le nombre de patches livrés chaque mois par Microsoft. En mai 2010 et 2011, l'éditeur n'avait fourni que deux mises à jour qui corrigeaient respectivement deux et trois vulnérabilités.

Microsoft et Cisco ont annoncé presque simultanément le lancement de nouvelles gammes de certifications à l'intention des ingénieurs IT spécialisés dans l'implémentation de leurs solutions.
Dans un souci de répondre aux dernières évolutions technologiques dans leurs domaines respectifs, l'éditeur Microsoft et le spécialiste des infrastructures réseaux Cisco ont tous deux annoncé le lancement de nouvelles certifications destinées aux professionnels de l'informatique chargés de l'implémentation et du maintien de leurs solutions.

Les RSSI défiés par Google Drive et Microsoft Skydrive
Les offres de stockage en cloud se multiplient. Les clés USB sont désormais dépassées. Les RSSI en ont-ils conscience ?
Microsoft devrait associer son Skydrive à Windows 8. Google vient de lancer son Google Drive. Réseaux et Télécoms revient sur ce lancement. A chaque fois, des utilisateurs lambda peuvent, sur leurs comptes personnels, disposer d'espaces de stockage de plusieurs giga-octets facilement accessibles par le navigateur web ou une application compagnon, sur tous types de terminaux. Est-ce vraiment un bien dans les entreprises ?
A chaque fois qu'un nouveau SaaS apparaît, les DSI se retrouvent sur la sellette. Les directions métier sont tentées d'y recourir sans rien demander et, bien sûr, sans se préoccuper d'une cohérence globale.

Kaspersky: Apple '10 years behind Microsoft in terms of security'
ugene Kaspersky believes Apple Mac OS X is 10 years behind Microsoft Windows in terms of security. He believes Cupertino will have to go through the security overhaul that Redmond once did.
“I think [Apple] are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security,” Kaspersky told CBR. “For many years I’ve been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It’s always been possible to develop Mac malware, but this one was a bit different. For example it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was able to get to the user mode without any alarms.”

If my mother-in-law can use Ubuntu Linux, anyone can
Enough is enough; you don’t need to be a tech. geek to use Linux. If my 79-year old mother-in-law can use the Ubuntu Linux desktop, anyone can.

One of the great Linux desktop myths is that it’s hard to use. People still think that you need to be some kind of mad computer wizard to use Linux. What nonsense. Desktop Linux has been as easy to use as any of the mainstream desktop operating systems for over a decade. How easy is it? My 79-year old mother-in-law, Hulvia, can use it.
She arrived a few weeks ago with her Windows laptop, but without her power cord. So, she needed a computer of her own. As I went down to garage/server room/spare computer storage locker, “What the heck, ifJason Perlow’s father-in-law could pick up Ubuntu Linux in 2007 at the age of 71, why not my mother-in-law at 79 in 2012!”
So, I grabbed a Dell Inspiron laptop, and I installed the latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on it. Canonical always claimed its Unity interface was easy to use and I thought it was too, but let’s see how someone who’s only used Windows could do with it.

The day software ate Cisco
Cisco’s track record with software tells us the company will not survive the shift to software-defined networking
It hasn’t happened yet. It’s another of my predictions. But it suddenly struck me this week, as I read about the latest developments in cloud networking. Five or so years from now, the day will come when Cisco will have shrunken almost to nothing, eaten by software.
Marc Andreessen’s phrase, “software is eating the world,” coined for a Wall Street Journal article last August, succinctly captures the single most important trend in our world today — not only in computing but in the entire field of business. It’s the driving force behind the rise of what I callfrictionless enterprise — the new way of working and doing business enabled by software that leverages the connectivity of the Web plugged into the power of today’s intelligent electronic devices.
At the beginning of the week, I read Cade Metz’ Wired article about Nicira, under the provocative title, Mavericks Invent Future Internet Where Cisco Is Meaningless. It was an eye-opening introduction to the emergence of the new field known as software-defined networking (SDN): “a new breed of computer network that exists only as software, a network you can control independently of the physical switches and routers running beneath it … a world where networks can be programmed like computers.”

Microsoft Exchange 15 to include offline OWA access: Sources
What’s coming in the Exchange Server 15 component of Microsoft’s next wave of Office wares? Here’s some scuttlebutt from my sources.
There’ve been a number of leaks about some of the products in the coming Office 15 wave. But there’s been nothing (that I’ve found, at least) about Exchange 15, the next version of Microsoft’s on-premises e-mail, calendaring and contacts server.
Until now, at least.
I’ve been collecting any tidbits I could find from my contacts with access to the Office 15 Technical Preview bits which Microsoft began releasing to testers earlier this year. (Microsoft just this week provided some of those private testers with an Office 15 refresh, from what I hear.)
Keep in mind that Microsoft officials are not commenting on features or plans for Office 15 and won’t until the company releases the public beta of Office 15 this summer. (Possibly in June.)
With that caveat, here’s what I’m hearing.

What's in a name? Microsoft replaces Windows Server 8 with 2012
Do you really care what Microsoft names its new operating system? I don’t either.
Yesterday, I heard from a source at the Microsoft Management Summit in Las Vegas that Microsoft now refers to Windows Server “8″ as Windows Server 2012. And, if you connect to microsoft.com, you’ll find that the 8* is now in quotes, just as mine is in the previous sentence. Interesting? I think so.
Most of us thought that the 8 was going to stick or that they’d name it Windows Server 2013. Using 8 seems hipper and cooler than the date thing. Although, I have done a political front-runner waffle on that topic. I think I like the 8 better now.

Citrix sort la version 10 de son ADC NetScaler
Citrix vient de livrer la version 10 de NetScaler, sa prochaine génération de controleur applicatif (Application Delivery Controller ou ADC). C'est la réponse proposée par l'éditeur pour donner une élasticité dynamique au réseau.
De plus en plus, les entreprises veulent que leurs datacenters soient aussi performants que les clouds publics, avec des fonctionnalités d'adaptabilité automatique vers le haut ou vers le bas, et une gestion plus efficace pour la livraison des applications. Ces controleurs de type appliance matériel ou virtuel permettent d'optimiser la livraison des applications aux utilisateurs. Grâce à des configurations logicielles ou matérielles, ils supervisent des fonctions très diverses, notamment les protocoles de bande passante et de sécurité, ce qui accèlère la livraison des applications aux utilisateurs, mais la rend aussi plus sûre et plus fiable. « Dans un environnement cloud, la demande d'applications peut changer rapidement et l'ADC doit tenir le rythme, » a déclaré Greg Smith, directeur senior du marketing produit pour la division Cloud Networking de Citrix.

Microsoft détaille les spécificités de Windows 8 Enterprise
Grâce à « Windows to Go », il est possible de faire tourner les images disques des PC d'entreprises sur les ordinateurs personnels des salariés.
En fin de semaine dernière, Microsoft a fait la démonstration de fonctionnalités propres à la version Enterprise de Windows 8. Parmi les trois futures éditions à venir de l'OS de l'éditeur, c'est la seule qui est exclusivement réservée aux entreprises clientes de Microsoft. En effet, Windows 8 Enterprise sera uniquement accessible aux sociétés qui ont des accords de licence régis par le programme de maintenance Software Assurance de Microsoft. Ce programme permet aux entreprises de bénéficier de mises à jour pour un produit donné pendant toute la durée du contrat. Globalement, l'assurance logicielle représente un surcoût de 23% à 29% environ par rapport au prix de la licence d'un produit desktop par année couverte

Benchmark de serveurs par VMware : Dell, Fujitsu, HP, IBM… dans un mouchoir
VMware a ouvert début 2012, aux constructeurs, la V2 de sa plateforme de tests comparatifs pour serveurs, VMmark 2.1. On se dispute les classements.
VMware ne prétend pas jouer l’arbitre. À moins que… Sa plateforme de benchmark est ouverte à tous et ne présente pas explicitement un podium des deux ou trois meilleurs constructeurs. Elle affiche les scores au fur et à mesure que les constructeurs soumettent leurs modèles de serveurs, qu’il s’agisse de serveurs lames (format blades) ou de racks. Mais le fait est que les résultats obtenus sont suivis de près par les grandes marques, d’autant que la course ne finit jamais : chaque fois que sort une nouvelle génération de processeurs, on peut parier que les serveurs qui en bénéficient vont afficher des chiffres encore meilleurs. Une compétition à la loyale, semble-t-il, avalisée, en tous cas, par les constructeurs.

How to use a VHD to dual-boot Windows 8 on a Windows 7 PC
I wanted to try Windows 8 on my new Ultrabook, but I didn’t want to mess up a perfectly good Windows 7 installation with a beta OS. And then it struck me: I can boot Windows 8 from a virtual hard disk. So can you, following these simple steps.
For the last six weeks, my portable PC of choice has been an ASUS Zenbook UX31E. It’s a wonderful little machine—light, fast, fun to use, and a great example of what’s right with the whole Ultrabook category.
I wanted to try Windows 8 on this machine, but I didn’t want to mess up a perfectly good Windows 7 installation. This is, after all, a machine I use for work, and Windows 8 is still a beta, with some rough edges.
The Zenbook has a 128GB SDD, which is fine for a secondary work PC but not enough to split in half for a conventional dual-boot setup. After a few milliseconds of thought, I rejected the idea of trying to shrink my existing disk partition so I could pull that off.
And then it struck me: Wait a minute. I can boot Windows 8 from a virtual hard disk on this machine!And 30 minutes later, that’s exactly what I was doing.

vCheck for Exchange 2010
One of the main areas I redesigned in vCheck 6 was the new plugin concept, in my mind this was a nice HTML output which could be used for more than just vSphere checks, the plugins could potentially be any product which has a PowerShell snap-in or module, and even some which don’t 
Shortly after the release I was contacted by Phil Randal who had done just this, he has taken the vCheck framework and written some Exchange 2010 plugins, this now turns the vCheck report into an Exchange monitoring report too. Awesome stuff!
