Red Hat lance le statut Virtualization Specialist
Grâce à la nouvelle certification Virtualization Specialist, les partenaires de Red Hat pourront afficher leurs compétences dans le domaine de la virtualisation.
Les partenaires commerciaux de Red Hat spécialisés dans la virtualisation pourront dorénavant mettre en avant leur savoir-faire. À cet effet, la compagnie crée un statut de Virtualization Specialist.
« En offrant à nos partenaires l’opportunité de se spécialiser dans la virtualisation, nous les aidons à répondre plus efficacement aux demandes de leurs clients », explique Petra Heinrich, directrice des partenariats et alliances de Red Hat pour la région EMEA. « A l’heure où la virtualisation se démocratise, nous devons pouvoir compter sur nos partenaires pour assurer le succès des projets d’implémentation de leurs clients et implanter nos solutions de virtualisation dans la région EMEA. C’est pour eux une occasion unique de se différencier sur leur segment de marché en proposant des technologies de virtualisation à des coûts rentabilisés. »
Ce statut n’est accordé qu’aux sociétés qui ont fait leurs preuves dans ce domaine. Le ticket d’entrée est toutefois à la portée de nombre de compagnies, puisqu’elles doivent fournir deux références clients et disposer de quatre spécialistes certifiés : deux administrateurs et deux vendeurs.
Ce programme n’apporte pas d’avantages financiers spécifiques, mais permettra aux entreprises de se mettre en avant et de bénéficier d’une reconnaissance de leurs compétences. Aujourd’hui, dix sept partenaires européens ont reçu cette certification, dont trois en France (Overlap, Proservia et Uperto Devoteam). La plupart de ces compagnies avaient participé au programme bêta de Red Hat, ce qui explique pourquoi leur nomination s’est faite aussi rapidement. Red Hat France nous informe que trois autres partenaires français devraient prochainement décrocher ce label.

The different ways to compact a disk
Today if you want to compact a virtual hard disk – you can use Virtual PC / Virtual Server / Hyper-V or Windows 7. But not all methods are the same. Under the covers there are two different approaches that are taken to compacting virtual hard disks:
Virtual PC / Virtual Server:
Perform a blind “block level” compaction. Here the virtual hard disk is inspected at a block level, and when a block is found which is full of zeroes, the block is removed from the virtual hard disk.
More accurately, zeroed blocks are not copied. Because when you compact a virtual hard disk with Virtual PC / Virtual Server – they do so by creating a new blank virtual hard disk and copying the data across – and then deleting the original virtual hard disk at the end.
Advantages:
- Works with any file system inside the virtual hard disk.
- Can compact differencing virtual hard disks (Windows Virtual PC only).
Disadvantages:
- Requires that you run a pre-compaction tool that writes zeroes to unused space in the virtual hard disk.
- May work better if you run a defragmentation program inside the virtual machine first.
- Requires that you have enough free space on the physical disk for a second copy of the virtual hard disk.
- Has to process all the data in the virtual hard disk – so can take a while.
Hyper-V / Windows 7:
Hyper-V and Windows 7 use a different approach to compacting virtual hard disks. What they do is look for an NTFS file system on the virtual hard disk. If they find one, they read this data directly and use it to identify zeroed blocks that can be removed from the virtual hard disk.
This operation is done “in place” which means that no second virtual hard disk is created.
Advantages:
- No preparation needed - just point it at an offline virtual hard disk and it works.
- No need for extra free space on the physical disk.
- Faster than Virtual PC / Virtual Server.
Disadvantages:
- Does not work with non-NTFS formatted virtual hard disks.

L'outil fournit un moyen de conserver les machines virtuelles hors connexion à jour permettant ainsi que lors du déploiement une machine virtuelle n'introduise pas de vulnérabilités dans le système d’information.
L'outil Offline Virtual Machine Servicing combine le modèle de programmation Windows Workflow avec l'interface Windows PowerShell pour mettre des groupes de machines virtuelles en ligne juste le temps pour elles de recevoir les mises à jour de System Center Configuration Manager 2007 ou de Windows Server Update Services.

Blogging about View
I had discussion with Richard Garsthagen during the Dutch VMUG about View/VDI related blogs, or better said the lack of. It appears that desktop is a topic bloggers are avoiding. The weird thing about it is that in the industry View is picking up more and more.
Yes there are a couple of bloggers out there who are focussing onView like my colleague Christoph Dommermuth but compared to the “core” product their share is tiny. For me personally there’s a simple reason you don’t see me blogging about View, it’s not part of my focus area.
Something I overlooked during the discussion are the two excellent whitepapers/articles Herco van Brugh wrote. The first one is a brand new whitepaper and discusses how to correctly scale your storage based on a couple simple formulas.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, or VDI, is hot. It’s cool, secure, centrally managed, flexible – it’s an IT manager’s dream.
However, as it turns out, there is a hidden danger to VDI. There’s a killer named “IOPS”. - Creating a VDI template
This guide is based on Windows XP because of its low resources usage compared to Vista and even Windows 7. The general idea however also applies to those versions although specific services and registry keys will most likely not work. Skipping Vista, the next version of this guide will focus on Windows 7.
Another thing I overlooked when I was doing a little research were the Reference Architectures EMC did. There’s some good info to be found in these. So it seems that there is info out there, I guess the “problem” is that there are only 1 or 2 bloggers who are solely focusing on View. So if you are a VDI/View Consultant now it is time to speak up. Step into the world of blogging and let your voice be heard!
Six Uses for the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target
Scott M. Johnson, a Program Manager in the Windows Storage Server team, has just published a new blog post that might give you some ideas on different ways to use the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target. He outlines six different uses for it:
1) Consolidate storage for multiple application servers.
2) Test and Development scenarios are endless, especially for Clustering, Live Migration, SAN transfer and Storage Manager for SANs.
3) Setup an iSCSI SAN for a Windows cluster.
4) Consolidate servers into Hyper-V VMs and migrate the data to a Windows Storage Server.
5) Diskless SAN boot over iSCSI!
6) “Bonus storage” for people in your organization. Storage Administrators can be a hero! (for once).

16% des workloads sont virtualisés, 50% le seront en 2012
Si l’on en croit les derniers chiffres de Gartner 16 % des “workloads” (le couple constitué par un environnement système et la ou les applications qui tournent dessus) des entreprises fonctionneraient aujourd’hui au sein de machines virtuelles. Selon le cabinet d’analystes, cette proportion devrait passer à environ 50% en 2012. Lire la suite
OWA 2010 et les navigateurs
Alors que sur le champ des navigateurs la bataille fait rage entre Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari ou encore le dernier arrivé Chrome, j'ai pensé qu'il était intéressant de faire un petit récapitulatif du niveau de compatibilité de chacun de ces navigateurs avec OWA 2010 (Outlook Web App de son nouveau nom).
Je ne souhaite pas rentrer dans le débat de quel est le navigateur le plus approprié ou le plus rapide ou le plus sécurisé … c'est un sujet à part entière dont nous auront probablement l'occasion de reparler d'ici peu. Nous allons nous contenter d'un état des lieux du comportement de OWA avec chacun de ces navigateurs. Voici la matrice de compatibilité :

Dans tous les cas, il sera nécessaire d'autoriser les pop-ups car ils sont utilisés par OWA pour plusieurs fonctionnalités. La meilleurs solution consiste à ajouter le site (ou l'espace d'adressage du serveur OWA) dans la liste des sites autorisés pour les pop-up.

Microsoft Acquires Opalis Software
Good news for a Friday. Brad's post (with video interview) announces the acquisition of Opalis Software. Why is this important to virtualization projects? Thoughts below, but first some background on the business.
Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business (STB) is a $14.1 billion business.
Within STB, the Management and Services Division is focused on reducing customers' costs and improve IT efficiency to drive businesses forward with a suite of products and services built around the System Center brand. In August 2009, Microsoft reported that the Management and Services Division revenues grew more than 30% from 2008 to 2009, and is now at approximately $1 billion in annual sales.
Financial terms of the acquisition won’t be disclosed. Opalis recently reported 104% increase in new license bookings for calendar Q3 (compared to Q3 2008), selling to enterprise and managed service provider customers.
So how is Opalis Software used? Here's some examples:
• Incident response standardize and automate triage, diagnose and repair processes to reduce the number of incidents.
• Provisioning orchestrate datacenter tools to configure, deploy, and verify IT services in response to an incident or change request. Provision server, storage, or network resources across physical, virtual or cloud environments.
• Virtual service management automate virtual lifecycle management to control server sprawl and extend management best practices, such as incident management and provisioning, to your virtual environments.
• Run book procedures automate re-occurring maintenance and administrative tasks, such as data and file handling, database and application support.
• Cloud Computing automate cloud lifecycle management, to request, provision, release and track costs of cloud resources.
So there's a summary. Brad says much more in his video interview. An analyst at Gartner forecasted that, by end of 2010, at least 50% of the automation and workflow management tasks in support of virtual server infrastructures will be supported by next-gen Run Book Automation-based tools. That's exactly what Opalis has created, and will become part of System Center.
As the CEO of Opalis wrote in his blog post today:
I believe, with the Opalis technology, Microsoft will have the most complete virtualization stack available from any single vendor.

Boot from Paravirtualized SCSI Adapter
From vSphere U1, VMware now support booting from a Paravirtualized SCSI adapter, why would you want to do this? Well why not, check out the VMware Performance Blog where VMware have tested this adapter and shared their results.
VMware were able to achieve 350,000 I/O operations per second on a single vSphere host (ESX 4.0) and 3 virtual machines. From their findings the VMware Paravirtual SCSI (PVSCSI) adapter was able to achieve 12% more throughput with 18% less CPU cost compared to the LSI virtual adapter… Now you see why we should use it!
So in trying to test this the first thing I did was move one of my current virtual machines onto the adapter by clicking “edit settings” go to “SCSI controller 0” and click the change type button, from there you can select “VMware Paravirtual”.
When booting the VM you may find a slight issue though..

VMtools was installed and at the latest version (U1) but although the PVSCSI driver is shipped with VMtools it is not actually active until you add a PVSCSI adapter to the VM so to enable the PVSCSI driver for the boot device we need a slight bit of trickery….

VMware ESX 3.5 Update (U5) Released
Just a quick post, albeit a few days late, to make those of you still running VMware ESX 3.5 aware that VMware have recently (4th December) released a new update for it – Update 5 (U5) which is available to download and install via all the usual update methods. So if you’re still running a version of ESX 3.5 you may want to consider upgrading to this new release which offers the following enhancements (from the VMware ESX 3.5 Update 5 release notes which can be found here): Enablement of Intel Xeon Processor 3400 Series – Support for the Intel Xeon processor 3400 series has been added. Support includes Enhanced VMotion capabilities. For additional information on previous processor families supported by Enhanced VMotion, see Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support (KB 1003212). Driver Update for Broadcom bnx2 Network Controller – The driver for bnx2 controllers has been upgraded to version 1.6.9. This driver supports bootcode upgrade on bnx2 chipsets and requires bmapilnx and lnxfwnx2 tools upgrade from Broadcom. This driver also adds support for Network Controller – Sideband Interface (NC-SI) for SOL (serial over LAN) applicable to Broadcom NetXtreme 5709 and 5716 chipsets. Driver Update for LSI SCSI and SAS Controllers – The driver for LSI SCSI and SAS controllers is updated to version 2.06.74. This version of the driver is required to provide a better support for shared SAS environments. ESX(i) 4.0 Update 1A
ESX(i) 4 Update 1 has just been re-released:
We’ve released a new version of ESX 4.0 Update 1 that resolves the issue with the ESX 4.0 Update 1 install failing, timing out and resulting in the host entering an usable state.
The new version is called ESX 4.0 Update 1A.

Administrez Windows Server 2008 R2 en mode Server Core avec SConfig et Core Configurator 2.0
L’administration d’un serveur Windows 2008 / 2008 R2 installé en mode Core n’est pas des plus aisée, surtout quand on ne connait pas trop les outils en ligne de commande ou lorsqu’on n’a jamais regardé une présentation sur le sujet (cf. à la fin de cet article pour les ressources utiles sur Windows Server 2008 Server Core).
Une des nouveautés disponibles dans Windows Server 2008 R2 installé en mode Core, c’est la présence d’un outil qui était apparu dans Windows Hyper-V Server 2008 : SConfig qui permet de paramétrer quelques élements de base de Windows Server 2008 R2.
En complément de cet outil, il existe désormais une version 2.0 d’un outil gratuit en Open Source appelé Core Configurator qui permet de compléter la configuration faisable avec Sconfig.
