Answering Exchange Virtualization Questions and Addressing Misleading VMware Guidance

I recommend anyone who is considering virtualizing MS Exchange read Jim Lucey's blog post and the comments below his post. VMware's HA guidance on virtualizing Exchange could be mis-interpreted, resulting in increased storage costs and placing data at risk. Here's an excerpt: We love that our customers are excited to deploy Exchange Server within virtualized environments. While VMware leveraged Exchange performance and sizing tools to provide guidance, their recommendations casually tiptoe around Microsoft system requirements,... [Lire la suite]

Case sensitivity of ISA/TMG generated proxy auto configuration (pac) files

Scenario From time to time we come across cases where customers complain that the proxy exception list does not work for certain URLs and (Winhttp) clients still try to connect to the destination server using the proxy instead of going directly. Affected applications vary, we have seen issues with outlook 2007, SCCM, but the list might not be limited to those two – any Winhttp application might show the same symptoms. Upon investigating these issues we found that the problem is a case-sensitivity issue – applications might... [Lire la suite]

Oracle Broadens x86 Virtualization Support, but Work Remains

Today EMC’s Chad Sakac blogged about a significant update to Oracle’s support policy for VMware ESX environments – Oracle no longer explicitly excludes Oracle RAC from being virtualized. It should also be noted that Oracle’s support is limited to “issues that either are known to occur on the native OS, or can be demonstrated not to be as a result of running on VMware.” In other words, if it’s not a known bug, customers may be asked to reproduce problems on the bare metal. Like Chad, this is an issue I have blogged about repeatedly... [Lire la suite]

How to Handle NTFS Folder Permissions, Security Descriptors and ACLs in PowerShell

1. Overview Some time ago, I was automating a few tasks with PowerShell and needed to set NTFS permissions on a folder. I was tempted to use the good old ICACLS.EXE command line, but I wanted to keep it all within PowerShell. While there are a number of different permissions you could want to set for a folder, my specific case called the following: -          Create a new folder -          Check the default permissions on the new folder - ...

VMotion, the story and confessions

There is something I always wanted to know and that is how VMotion(yes I am using the old school name on purpose) came to life. After some research on the internet and even on the internal websites I noticed that there are hardly any details to be found. Now this might be because the story isn’t as exciting as we hope it  will be or because no one took the time to document it. In my opinion however VMotion is still one of the key features VMware offers but even more important it is what revolutionized the IT world. I think it... [Lire la suite]
