How to consolidate a snapshot in VMware ESX when there are virtual machine errors

When powering on a virtual machine, have you ever come across this error message? The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created. Or perhaps you are unable to remove snapshots for virtual machines on one or more datastores. That one I know causes many calls into Support. There are several cases where you may encounter Snapshot issues after experiencing issues with a virtual machine. We've just updated KB 1007849 to include a video: Consolidating snapshots (1007849) The KB and video applies to ESX 4.1... [Lire la suite]

Exchange 2010 Personal Archives and Client Access

In Exchange 2010, you can provision Personal Archives for your users. A personal archive, or an archive mailbox, is an additional mailbox where users can move older messages or messages that they don’t need to access frequently but may still want to retain for a longer period. You can also apply a Retention Policy to mailboxes to have old email moved to the archive after a certain period. Moving older email out of the primary mailbox keeps it smaller and faster, although larger mailboxes aren’t a concern according to Microsoft’s... [Lire la suite]

Using Get-Hotfix to get a list of installed hotfixes

Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 requires a number of hotfixes to be installed. These are listed in Exchange 2010 Prerequisites in Exchange 2010 documentation and in the Exchange 2010 SP1 FAQ and Known Issues post on the Exchange team blog. While preparing a server for SP1, I erroneously kept trying to install the hotfixes on the Hyper-V host sytem, which has Windows 2008 R2 (instead of the VM running Windows Server 2008 SP2). Obviously, none of the hotfixes I downloaded for Windows 2008 SP2 would apply, and the hotfix installer...

Random authentication prompts while accessing internet through ISA Server followed by ISA Server becoming unresponsive

Introduction Consider a scenario where users behind ISA Server (internal network) start to receive random prompts for authentication while trying to access internet using ISA Server as proxy. The authentication prompt persists even after entering the credentials. To resolve the issue it is necessary to restart Firewall Service. Although you probably heard or read about this scenario many times, the goal of this post is to give you a compiled version of the action plan and what to look for while analyzing the data. Data...

Using NTLM Outlook Anywhere Authentication through Forefront TMG and UAG

The last in the series of papers I wrote in this general area has just been published and is available here. This one details the configuration you need when you want to have Outlook Anywhere use NTLM authentication when published through TMG or UAG. Why would you ever want to do this? Well, if your clients are domain joined it does avoid the Basic authentication pop up in most cases, and because it is more secure than Basic as credentials never pass over the wire (though of course with Basic they are, or certainly should be,... Configuring Multiple OWA/ECP Virtual Directories on Exchange 2010 Client Access Server

A while back we published an article explaining the support constraints that surrounded deploying Exchange 2007 with multiple Outlook Web App (OWA) Virtual Directories (see here http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/01/07/447828.aspx) and as this idea seems to come up more and more frequently, we wanted to do the same for Exchange 2010. Microsoft supports using multiple OWA and Exchange Control Panel (ECP) virtual directories on a single Exchange 2010 Client Access Server, each in its own website. Each virtual directory must be... Exchange 2010 SP1: The Troubleshooters

When managing an Exchange 2010 server organization in a production environment, an Exchange Administrator many times wants to keep track of things like Database Latency, Disk Space problems, search issues, user needs, and more. PowerShell was created to give us more power in our admin efforts, and many books have already been written to assist us with mastering the ins and outs of PowerShell Programming. What if I told you that you already had some examples of PowerShell programming, right on your Exchange server? And they are pretty... [Lire la suite]
