VMware vCenter Appliance under Linux
I was playing around in my lab and figured I would give the vCenter Appliance (VCVA) a try. I realize that today there are limitations when it comes to the vCenter Appliance and I wanted to list those to get them out in the open:
No Update Manager
No Linked-Mode
No support for the VSA (vSphere Storage Appliance)
Only support for Oracle as the external database
Embedded database, DB2, only supports 5 hosts and 50 VMs
No support for vCenter Heartbeat

Microsoft to release PST Capture tool to search, import and destroy PST files
Microsoft has announced it will release PST Capture, a free tool to search .PST files, import them into Exchange Server 2010 and Exchange Online and (optionally) destroy the files.
Exchange mailbox data is stored on Exchange servers – either on-premises in your organization’s datacenter, or in Exchange Online if you’re using Microsoft’s new Office 365 cloud service. Historically, Outlook users have used .PST files to store messages on their computers in order to reduce the size of their mailbox on Exchange or simply to... [Lire la suite]

Safely erase old data with the Format command
As explained in this article there are some important changes in Windows 2008 and 2008 R2 regarding how the formatting of a partition is done. Shortly, when doing a non-quick format the whole drive is overwritten once, compared to Windows 2003 where all information on the main disk area was left behind.
If there is data on a partition that should be permanently and safely erased there are plenty of third party tools that could do this, but it is important to know that we have some possibility already builtin. However,... [Lire la suite]

ESXi 5.0 partitions
In this article we will look at the partition layout of ESXi 5.0. A change from earlier ESXi 4.x is that the older MBR partitioning system is replaced with a GPT style partition table. The first five partitions are mandatory and consumes exactly 900 MB together, while the last two is not technically necessary.
The first small partition is just for booting the system and locating the hypervisor image which could be on one of the next two partitions.
The actual system image is located on the first 250 MB partition, formatted... [Lire la suite]

Verify redirected Computers container in Active Directory
How to see if the default location for new computer accounts has been changed in an Active Directory domain.

VMware accidentally leaks the feature list of View 5. Drum roll… underwhelmed
Yesterday VMware accidentally posted the Release Notes for View 5.0, the latest version of their VDI product which they'll be announcing at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas later this month. The leaked document was quickly deleted, but not before plenty of people downloaded and re-shared it via twitter.
The features included are pretty much exactly what Bridget predicted a few weeks ago on SearchVirtualDesktop.com, although she also mentioned a type of disk image streaming that's so far not included. (Could this be the much... [Lire la suite]
