How to create your own .vib files

* Be warned, this is totally unsupported. Only for educational purposes should this be used ** Today I was asked the question on how to create a .vib file. In our documentation it is mentioned that you can create a .vib file to add firewall rules to your ESXi host. As the .vib tool is not available yet to the general public I decided to dig in to it. I want to stress that I tested this in my own lab, it is not supported at all, but might give a nice insight in how these .vibs are constructed. Before you read how I created my own .vib... Exchange ActiveSync: What is the Allow/Block/Quarantine List?

If you’re an Exchange admin happy about how Exchange ActiveSync just hums along with mobile devices supporting the EAS protocol, and the multitude of devices that can now access Exchange without any admin intervention (OTA device activation and all that…), but also unhappy about the multitude of devices that can now access Exchange without any admin intervention, there’s news for you. Petite note personnelle : VCP 5 OK!

How to configure ESXi to boot via Software iSCSI?

VMware introduced support for iSCSI back in the ESX 3.x days. However, ESX could only boot from an iSCSI LUN if a hardware iSCSI adapter was used. Hosts could not boot via VMware's iSCSI driver using a NIC with special iSCSI capabilities. It quickly became clear that there was a need for booting via Software iSCSI. VMware's partners are developing blade chassis containing blade servers, storage and network interconnects in a single rack. The blades are typically disk-less, and in many cases have iSCSI storage. The... [Lire la suite]

DELL's Multipath Extension Module for EqualLogic now supports vSphere 5.0

DELL recently released their new Multipath Extension Module (MEM) for the EqualLogic PS Series of storage array. This updated MEM now supports vSphere 5.0.I guess I should try to explain what a MEM is before going any further. VMware implements a Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA) model in the VMkernel. This means that storage array vendors can write their own multipathing modules to plugin to the VMkernel I/O path. These plugins can co-exist alongside VMware's own default set of modules. There are different modules for different... [Lire la suite]

ESXi commandline work…

am just playing around in my lab and needed to do a couple of common ESXi commandline tasks which I figured I would document as they will come in handy at some point. Using the vCenter Appliance for the Web Client?

Today on twitter there was a discussion around having an appliance for the vSphere Web Client. I didn’t get the question as there’s already a vCenter Appliance out there. Apparently not everyone realised that the Web Client is part of the vCenter Appliance. On top of that you could even split out the components and use the vCenter Appliance just for Web Client functionality. I remembered seeing an article from one of my colleagues not too long ago. I dug up the links and here they are. I included a short snippet so you know what to... [Lire la suite]
