vSphere 5.1 Update 1 Released!
VMware has just released the much anticipated Update 1 patch for vSphere 5.1 which includes several updates and bug fixes for both ESXi and vCenter Server 5.1. I highly encourage everyone to review the release notes for the complete list of resolved issues. While going through the ESXi 5.1 Update 1 release notes myself, I noticed a few resolved bugs that I had been following and thought I would highlight a few of them:
Reinstallation of ESXi 5.1 does not remove the Datastore label of the local VMFS of an...

Easily Rescan All ESXi Host Storage
I'm what you might call a contradiction. I'm definitely not a fan of the repetitive task, but am also coincidentally too lazy to learn how to script this very same task. Sometimes I luck out and a quick Web search will point me in the right direction, or other times my laziness takes me to built-in functions that can help me out just as well. The vSphere Client (and Web Client!) have helped me avoid scripting one more time! Whew!
The repetitive task of the day is adding a VMFS volume to a vSphere cluster. Before I found this little... [Lire la suite]

Understanding ESXi Patches – Size & Patch Bundles
Patch management for ESXi is very different compared to traditional operating system patches, where incremental updates are made to the base operating system and thus increasing the disk footprint for each patch update. For the ESXi hypervisor, when a patch is applied, the entire ESXi image also known as an Image Profile is replaced. This means that each time you patch or upgrade your ESXi host, you are not adding on top of the original installation size.
As part of the ESXi architecture, there are two... [Lire la suite]

Tweaking your Windows 7/XP Desktops on VDI
My buddy John Simon has put together some common tweaks he uses for for his company’s Virtual Desktops. These are easy tweaks that can be used in VMware View and Citrix XenDesktop desktops but are sometimes forgot. Pop them into your VM template and reap the performance benefits. Some can also be used on your local machine for some enhanced performance.
Disable hibernation by running the command powercfg /hibernate off from the command line (WIN7/XP):
Set the windows page file to a... [Lire la suite]

VDP Advanced Error – Unable to register the Backup Agent service
While installing the SQL Server agent for VDP Advanced, I ran into an error: RegisterAgent: Unable to register the Backup Agent service.

Installing Dell Equallogic Multipathing Extension Module (MEM) in vSphere 5.1
Dell offers a Multipathing Extension Module (MEM) for vSphere, and in this post I´ll highlight how to “manually” install it on a ESXi 5.1 host. I will not cover the network setup part of the equation, but rather go through the simple steps required to get the MEM installed on the hosts in question.
First of all, you need to download the MEM installation package. At the time of writing, the latest version is v1.1.2.292203, available from equallogic.com. One the archive file is aquired, unzip it and upload... [Lire la suite]

Yet another reason to move your VDI to Windows 8
Yesterday I published a blog post entitled “Why you should move your VDI to Windows 8” comparing different versions of Windows during IDLE and Login process. One of my readers (John Hardman) suggested that I also should measure disk IO commands issued from multiple Windows OS during boot time.
What I found in the additional test is another pretty compelling reason to move VDI environments from Windows 7 to Windows 8. In this test Windows 8 excelled when compared to Windows 7. During the boot process there were 54%... [Lire la suite]
