Why can you not use NIC Teaming with iSCSI Binding?

I had an interesting discussion recently with a number of my colleagues around the requirement to place additional uplinks (vmnics) on a virtual switch that are not used by iSCSI binding into the 'Unused' state. One would think that it might be useful to team these uplinks, placing some in Standby mode so that in the case of a failure on the active link, the iSCSI traffic could  move to the standby uplink. But the requirement is that other vmnics must be put into the 'Unused' state and not teamed. Why? This requirement... [Lire la suite]

How to create your own .vib files

* Be warned, this is totally unsupported. Only for educational purposes should this be used ** Today I was asked the question on how to create a .vib file. In our documentation it is mentioned that you can create a .vib file to add firewall rules to your ESXi host. As the .vib tool is not available yet to the general public I decided to dig in to it. I want to stress that I tested this in my own lab, it is not supported at all, but might give a nice insight in how these .vibs are constructed. Before you read how I created my own .vib... How to configure ESXi to boot via Software iSCSI?

VMware introduced support for iSCSI back in the ESX 3.x days. However, ESX could only boot from an iSCSI LUN if a hardware iSCSI adapter was used. Hosts could not boot via VMware's iSCSI driver using a NIC with special iSCSI capabilities. It quickly became clear that there was a need for booting via Software iSCSI. VMware's partners are developing blade chassis containing blade servers, storage and network interconnects in a single rack. The blades are typically disk-less, and in many cases have iSCSI storage. The... [Lire la suite]
