DELL's Multipath Extension Module for EqualLogic now supports vSphere 5.0

DELL recently released their new Multipath Extension Module (MEM) for the EqualLogic PS Series of storage array. This updated MEM now supports vSphere 5.0.I guess I should try to explain what a MEM is before going any further. VMware implements a Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA) model in the VMkernel. This means that storage array vendors can write their own multipathing modules to plugin to the VMkernel I/O path. These plugins can co-exist alongside VMware's own default set of modules. There are different modules for different... [Lire la suite]

ESXi commandline work…

am just playing around in my lab and needed to do a couple of common ESXi commandline tasks which I figured I would document as they will come in handy at some point. List all VMs registered to this host (This reveals the Vmid needed for other commands)vim-cmd /vmsvc/getallvms Unregister a VMvim-cmd /vmsvc/unregister <Vmid> Register a VMvim-cmd /solo/register /path/to/file.vmx Get power state of a VMvim-cmd /vmsvc/power.getstate <Vimid> Power off a VMvim-cmd /vmsvc/power.off <Vmid> Power on a VMvim-cmd... Using the vCenter Appliance for the Web Client?

Today on twitter there was a discussion around having an appliance for the vSphere Web Client. I didn’t get the question as there’s already a vCenter Appliance out there. Apparently not everyone realised that the Web Client is part of the vCenter Appliance. On top of that you could even split out the components and use the vCenter Appliance just for Web Client functionality. I remembered seeing an article from one of my colleagues not too long ago. I dug up the links and here they are. I included a short snippet so you know what to... [Lire la suite]

Troubleshooting ESXi networking with LLDP

One common issue with networking in virtualized environments is the outgoing ports from the virtual switches to the physical network switches. Configuring with VLANs and similar must be done very carefully to ensure that all ports are correctly setup. It is often quite hard to track patch cables going from the server chassis to the switch port and it is often also difficult to determine the relation between the ESXi server NIC ports to the VMNICs visible inside ESXi. A very helpful tool is a network discovery protocol, for... [Lire la suite]

Time to revisit recommendations around Windows networking enhancements usually called Microsoft Scalable Networking Pack

Over the years, there has been a lot of debate around features in Windows which are usually referred to as Microsoft Scalable Networking Pack (individual features are known as Receive Side Scaling (RSS) and Chimney/TCP Connection Offload/TOE), and the effect of having them enabled or disabled on our servers. Taking the trip down the memory lane - while it is true that when the features were released in Windows 2003 SP2, there were some issues to work out (in both Microsoft and 3rd party code such as network drivers) - the situation...
