VM Start-up script

ack in Jan 2010 I wrote a script which shut down the virtual infrastructure, this was used to ensure your VMs were shut down and then your hosts were shut down in an orderly manner, ideal for things like UPS shutdown scripts etc. A slight spin on that is a Start-Up script, I was asked by a couple of people if I had one of these, it also becomes more relevant with the vCenter Virtual appliance, no need for HA and DRS rules or to manually search for the vCenter Virtual Appliance if there is a power outage. The script below will... [Lire la suite]

Using vSwitch CDP with HP switches

In this blog post we looked at the new support for vendor neutral discovery protocol LLDP in vSphere 5. Unfortunately LLDP is only available on the Distributed Virtal Switches and not for ordinary vSwitch. However, for a long time we had CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) in the vSwitches, but as the name implies is a Cisco proprietary method. If running Cisco devices this is no problem, but for example HP Procurve has no full support for CDP. This means that they cannot send any CDP data, but is actually... [Lire la suite]

Veeam Backup and Replication Support for Hyper-V is Finally Here

ust last week, Veeam announced the release of version 6 of their popular Backup & Replication solution. Among the many enhancements for VMware vSphere, including enterprise scalability, enhanced performance, accelerated replication and the 1-click file restore feature, the most notable addition to the new version is support for Hyper-V. Recognizing the huge demand, Veeam has been working on this functionality for quite some time, making the big announcement earlier this year at TechEd. When I met with Doug... [Lire la suite]

Does your PC have what it takes to run Windows 8's Hyper-V?

If you’re planning to test the beta of Windows 8 when it arrives early next year, you’d better start thinking about your hardware now. One of the killer features of the new operating system, Hyper-V virtualization, is picky about hardware. Here’s what to look for. Are you planning to test Windows 8 when the beta release arrives in February? If so, you’d better start thinking about your hardware now. You might have your eye on a surplus PC as a Windows 8 test bed. A two-year-old PC seems like a perfect candidate for a test... [Lire la suite]

Why can you not use NIC Teaming with iSCSI Binding?

I had an interesting discussion recently with a number of my colleagues around the requirement to place additional uplinks (vmnics) on a virtual switch that are not used by iSCSI binding into the 'Unused' state. One would think that it might be useful to team these uplinks, placing some in Standby mode so that in the case of a failure on the active link, the iSCSI traffic could  move to the standby uplink. But the requirement is that other vmnics must be put into the 'Unused' state and not teamed. Why? This requirement... [Lire la suite]
