Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance 5.0.x/5.1 to 5.5 (2058441)

Purpose This article provides steps to upgrade vCenter Server Appliance from 5.0.x/5.1 to 5.5. Resolution Notes: vCenter Server Appliance 5.0.1, 5.1.x, and 5.5 use PostgreSQL for the embedded database, instead of IBM DB2 that was used in vCenter Server Appliance 5.0. If you use the embedded database with the vCenter Server Appliance, when you upgrade to version 5.5, the embedded IBM DB2 database is migrated to a PostgreSQL database. The configuration state of your existing database is preserved and the schema is upgraded to be... [Lire la suite]

Howto: AD Authentication in vCenter SSO 5.5

With the recently released VMware vSphere 5.5, the component Single-Sign-On (SSO) has been completely rewritten. The biggest change is that the RSA database has been removed, which eliminates much of its complexity. There is also a new identity type (Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)) that works without specifying the AD Controllers directly, like the old vSphere 4.x / 5.0 authentication. The whole process is much easier. This post shows how to enable Active Directory Authentication within the new vSphere 5.5... [Lire la suite]

Quick Tip: Useful Flash Player optimization for the vSphere Web Client & other Flash WebApps

recently picked up a useful tidbit from engineering on a Flash Player optimization setting that can be helpful when using the vSphere Web Client or any other Flash web application for that matter. The particular setting is the Website Storage Settings which controls the amount of temporary data that can be stored by the Flash Player on your local disk and by default this is limited to 100Kb. This limited storage footprint is actually done on purposes as a security feature of Flash. However, at some point the Flash Player will reach... [Lire la suite]

What’s New in VMware Horizon View 5.3 (Beyond Marketing)

It’s that time again! VMware just announced VMware Horizon View 5.3 and has also lifted the NDA. Despite being only a ‘dot’ release the Horizon View team added a significant number of features that provide improvements in the areas of performance, user experience and management. Following the format of my previous articles “What’s New (Beyond Marketing)” I am going to also introduce new features that don’t necessarily make to the marketing press releases but also represent major product improvements. I also would like to highlight... [Lire la suite]

[Release] ESXi-Customizer-PS version 2.0

I just released a new major version of my ESXi-Customizer-PS PowerCLI script that greatly simplifies and automates the process of creating fully patched and customized ESXi 5.x installation ISOs using the ImageBuilder snapin. What's new: A new operational mode (-update) allows to update a locally existing ESXi Offline bundle with the latest patch level from the VMware Online depot. This way you can easily bring a vendor supplied ESXi installation ISO (like the HP Customized ISO) to the most recent ESXi patch level. ... [Lire la suite]

VMware vSphere 5.x and Windows 2012 possible Data corruption

POSSIBLE DATA CORRUPTION ISSUE, MUST READ! Sorry for starting this way, but this is a big deal, and I wanted to make sure you catch this when scanning through the weekend spam. Apparently, VMware issued a support KB article on this issue a few weeks ago, but it totally flew under the radar (I have not seen a single tweet or blog about this). In short, any data flowing through the VM network stack may get corrupted - including file copies, remote clients interactions with databases, any client-server or multi-tiered apps. The scariest...
