Time Synchronization in Hyper-V
There is a lot of confusion about how time synchronization works in Hyper-V – so I wanted to take the time to sit down and write up all the details.
There are actually multiple problems that exist around keeping time inside of virtual machines – and Hyper-V tackles these problems in different ways.
Problem #1 – Running virtual machines lose track of time.
While all computers contain a hardware clock (called the RTC – or real-time clock) most operating systems do not rely on this clock. Instead they read the time... [Lire la suite]

Hyper-V Dynamic Memory test for VDI density
Hi, I’m Michael Kleef, senior technical product manager within the Windows Server and Cloud division.
As Brad Anderson and I discussed at the TechEd Europe keynote today, Dynamic Memory, a new feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, can increase Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) densities by 40% compared to Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2 and also well above a leading industry solution. It’s also not just a benefit to VDI. Our Technology Adoption Program (TAP) customer data also highlights that other server workloads benefit... [Lire la suite]

Is VMware planning to support Hyper-V and Xen?
William Lam, who runs the virtualGhetto blog has discovered more than 1200 undocumented VMware .vmx parameters. Using UNIX/Linux utility strings Lam discovered the parameters in the /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx binary which is used to load a VM configuration file.
Based on the contents he discovered Lam makes the following speculations:
VMware vSphere is going to support virtual Hypervisors, specifically Microsoft and Xen.
vSphere is going to support Mac OSX, by providing EFI Support and support for Darwin as guest OS.

How does Symantec ApplicationHA integrate/work with VMware HA?
I briefly touched on this topic already, but I guess on Yellow-Bricks the primary focus should be technical. I downloaded Symantec’s Application HA and decided to give it a spin, I already started documenting the installation of the ApplicationHA Console and the Guest Component but Mr Sloof beat me to it and documented his finding in the following two articles.
ApplicationHA – Install and Configure
The ApplicationHA Configuration Wizard – Monitoring SQL Server 2008
No need to repeat it in my opinion as Eric did an excellent... [Lire la suite]
