How VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant bridges the ESXi management gap
The VMware ESX service console is used to run scripts and load third-party applications so that you can manage your ESX host systems and virtual infrastructure. VMware ESXi, however, doesn't have a service console. VMware has created Virtual Infrastructure Management Assistant (VIMA) to fill that gap. VIMA also provides an avenue for centralized scripting for VMware ESX servers – a much needed feature. Fortunately, VIMA is free and easy to install if you have proper instructions.
What is the VMware Infrastructure Management... [Lire la suite]

Two options for installing the VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant (pour ESX3i)
VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant (VIMA) streamlines VMware ESXi management by acting as a service console. VIMA is a virtual appliance used for centralized scripting, centralized command execution and centralized third-party application installations in VMware environments; it's a command-line interface-only Linux server that allows you to run all the typical vicfg-xxxx commands, across all ESX hosts, with no authentication. VIMA also provides centralized log consolidation for ESX servers. In the second part of this two-part... [Lire la suite]

Sending data from parent to virtual machine via KVP
Last week I showed you how to gather information about the guest operating system running in a virtual machine by using the key-value pair functionality of Hyper-V. This week I would like to drill into how to send information from the parent to the virtual machine using the same component.
Using KVP you can send arbitrary string data into the virtual machine. You specify one string as the unique "key" and a second string as the data that is to be sent in.
In the past I have discussed how to do this with... [Lire la suite]

Distributed Power Management: Improved Efficiency or Playing with Fire?
Today I played catch-up with Mike Dipetrillo’s blog, which contained an interesting post on VMware’s Distributed Power Management (DPM), an “experimental” feature in VMware’s VI 3.5 software. This is an interesting concept, and one that competitors such as Virtual Iron offer as well. While such features make for a nice story and blog post, I have to question how relevant they are to the typical enterprise. Don’t get me wrong. Power management is critical and the virtualization platform vendors will have to play a role in adding power... [Lire la suite]

56,000 Seat Production Exchange 2007 Deployment:
An interesting case study on virtualizing Exchange. Some interesting experiences on performance. General picture is - you can do it but don’t under spec the VM, and make sure you have enough physical resources to do it. I think we are moving away from the “low-hanging fruit” conservatism of the last couple of years…

Offline VM Patchin Free Tool
http://tendam.wordpress.com/2008/11/09/offline-updating-your-vms-fast-and-free/
A colleague showed me a tool for offline updating windows clients and servers. It’s called the c’t offline update tool. Just start the tool and download the patches for your platform en create a iso file with the tool. Move this iso file to your vmware iso datastore and connect your vm’s and run the tool to update the vm’s. This is a very quick method to update your vm’s when you have not installed updates for a long time.
