Updates for Hyper-V

A new article has appeared on the TechNet Wiki that provides a complete list of updates for Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/15576.hyper-v-update-list-for-windows-server-2012.aspx I am really happy to see this online, as we have received lots of positive feedback about how useful the existing documentation is for updates that are available for Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 and on Windows Server 2008.  Hopefully this will help everyone in planning and managing their... Promote a Member Server to Domain Controller in Windows Server 2012

Configuring Active Directory on Windows Server 2012 is a process worthy of patience and attention to detail. It involves installing the Active Directory Domain Services role, defining a new AD forest, creating the first (or root) domain in the forest, configuring DNS, and promoting a member server to a domain controller. Whew, that seems like a bunch of work! Never fear, Petri is here! A previous Petri post details how to get the Active Directory Domain Services role installed and running on a Windows Server 2012 machine. This... [Lire la suite]

Scale Out File Server for Mirage – Windows 2012 w/Dedupe

In my previous post I had talked about how to setup caching on Nutanix. Here we are creating two 1 TB drives to our Windows 2012 VM that will reside on our NFS volume that that has compression enabled. We use two different scsi controller for performance. More disks, more threads, better performance. Keep in mind that Mirage will only support 1500 connections per Mirage Server so there is much point throwing all your storage on one Mirage Server – Scale it Out with DFS. --> Please see the rest on the...

Multi-tenant disaster recover solution using Windows Server 2012

Windows Server 2012 introduces fundamental improvements that make it a cloud-ready operating system. The capabilities provide a flexible and scalable solution which opens up a wide range of opportunities for hosting providers to build new cloud services. This blog post is co-authored by Uma Mahesh, Senior Program Manager and Yigal Edery, Principal Program Manager in the Windows Server division. The blog article is based on Yigal’s TechEd talk on “Building Hosted Public and Private Clouds Using Windows Server 2012” In this post,... [Lire la suite]

Dynamic Memory Pro Tip – be reasonable with your startup ram

Hyper-V now allows you to configure a startup, minimum and maximum memory limit.  If you are like me – you probably leave the startup ram at the default of 512mb – but you should really consider changing it to better suit your environment.  Here is a quick screenshot from one of my Hyper-V servers: Two things that I have discovered: Some of my virtual machines benefit from having a startup and minimum that is below 512mb.  My FTP server, for instance, is a core installation of Windows server which just acts as an... Backing up Hyper-V virtual machines from the command line

Last week I posted about how you can now use Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2012 to backup virtual machines.  One of the first questions that people had was “how do I do this from the command-line?”  So – let me show you! The tool you will want to use is “wbadmin.exe” Backing up a virtual machine is fairly straight forward.  Your command will look like this: wbadmin start backup –backupTarget:<location to backup to> –hyperv:<list of virtual machines to backup> --> Please see the rest on the...

Access denied on Admin share in Windows 2012

One thing you may not know is that when you add a disk to a Windows 2012 virtual machine under vSphere 5, it gets added and tagged as removable. The consequence of this tag is that when you try to access that disk using \\servername\e$, a popup message appear: "Windows cannot access \\servername\e$ You do not have permission to access \\servername\e$. Contact your network administrator to request access." If you look on the security log of your Windows server: an audit failure should have appeared --> please see the rest on... [Lire la suite]

How To Back Up Hyper-V VMs Natively in Windows Server 2012

Did you know that with Windows Server 2012 you can now backup Hyper-V VMs with very little effort and very little configuration? Now, I'm not recommending that you throw out your existing enterprise backup system and standardize on Windows Server Backup in 2012, especially if you are using products like System Center Data Protection Manager (which is fantastic for backup) or Veeam or others. But, in a pinch Windows Server 2012's backup is quite handy. Before you can use Windows Server Backup, you must add that feature from Server... [Lire la suite]
