ESXi 5.1 Free – how to run nested Hyper-V

How-to run nested Hyper-V 2012 Server on latest version of ESXi 5.1 If you want to test the latest Microsoft Hyper-V running as a VM on ESXi 5.1 free version, you might run into a following error: “Hyper-V cannot be installed: A hypervisor is already running.” when trying to install the Hyper-V role. In ESXi 5.1 free version the tweak slightly changed (compared to ESXi 5.0) and it’s much easier to install the Hyper-V role, to actually enable Hyper-V as a VM with the possibility to run second level nested 64bit VMs inside of that... Release: VMware vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager 1.0

VMware has released version 1.0 of its vCenter Multi-Hypervisor Manager, an optional module which is capable of managing the Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor from vCenter. While vCenter markets the product as a Multi-Hypervisor product this version clearly targets Microsoft because it only supports the Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 hypervisors at this time. It’s not clear if VMware is planning to support Windows Server 2012 which contains Hyper-V 3.0 or the Xen Hypervisor any time soon. Microsoft also...

Virtual Machines Fail to Start with Error 0x80070569

We have received some reports from people who are seeing an error 0x80070569 when they try to start or live migrate virtual machines on Windows Server 2012. After some investigation we have found that this is usually caused by the use of a custom group policy setting in their domain. We have written a KB article that explains how to work around this issue if you see it in your environment: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779204 Cheers, Ben --> Please see the rest on Ben's Blog... Windows Server 2012 File Server Tip: Switch to the High Performance power profile

When you install a fresh copy of Windows Server 2012 and configure it with the File Server role, the default Power Setting balances power efficiency and performance. For this reason, even if you have a few high speed network interfaces and the fastest SSD storage out there, you might not be getting the very best IOPS and throughput possible. To get the absolute best performance from your file server, you can set the server to the "High Performance" power profile. To configure this using a GUI, go to the Start Menu, search for...

TechNet Radio series covers Windows Server 2012 File Server and SMB 3.0 scenarios

I have been working with Bob Hunt at the TechNet Radio team to provide a series of webcasts with information about SMB 3.0 and the File Server role in Windows Server 2012. These are fairly informal conversations, but Bob is really good at posing interesting questions, clarifying the different scenarios and teasing out relevant details on SMB 3.0. By the way, don’t be fooled by the “Radio” in the name. These are available as both video and audio, typically including at least one demo for each episode. Here is a list of the TechNet...
