Truncate vpx_event table in vCenter database

Hi, I recently had a problem at a client's site with vSphere vCenter 5.1, where the client had SQL Express which is limited to 10GB database. This should be more than working, but the client has exploded the 10GB, where the calculator was expecting less than 3GB. The Events and Tasks tables were faulty, and to clean up in emergency, we used the script on the blog below to clean the faulty tables. The identify them we used the following script... Be carefull with VMware SSO Master password bug

This week I installed a fresh vSphere 5.1 Update 1 environment and I wanted to configure it will real world certificates to get rid of all those “Do you really really reeeeeally accept this insecure website” messages. Using the VMware SSL Certificate Automation Tool I generated all the new certificates and then started changing the certificate on the VMware SSO server. When doing this, you’ll be asked for the Master password. Since I learned a while ago in a very painful way that the Admin@System-domain password is not equal to... [Lire la suite]

ALERT: Login issue after updating to vCenter 5.1 Update 1

VMware has become aware of an issue that may occur after upgrading to vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1.   Specifically: You are unable to log in using the vSphere Web Client or domain username/password credentials via the vSphere Client. This issue can occur if the specified vCenter Server login domain user account is associated with a large number of domain groups and multiple domains are configured as SSO identity sources. The precise number of groups at which this issue can occur varies due to the nature of Active... [Lire la suite]

Plug-in VMware Horizon View dans vSphere Web Client

vSphere 5.1 – VMDK versus RDM

It seems the debate between using a VMDK on VMFS or an RDM still rages when it comes to the question which one is better for performance. The VMware team has published a lot of evidence in the past that the difference is very minor, in fact difficult to measure accurately and probably unperceivable to customers.  Definitely not worth giving up the value of encapsulating a VM. Published Dec 7, 2007 (on ESX 3.0.1)http://www.vmware.com/resources/techresources/1019 Published Feb 13, 2008 (on ESX... [Lire la suite]

vSphere 5.1 Performance History issue!

I was just made aware of this issue with the vSphere 5.1 performance history charts. The symptoms are straight forward: You see only the last 30 days of performance history in the ‘past year’ view Only one month of performance history appears when trying to see the past year VMware is working on a solution for the problem currently. It seems the problem has been identified (stored procedure purging data) and hopefully a fix will be released soon. Please subscribe to the following KB to be kept up to... [Lire la suite]

Isolation detection in vSphere 5.1 versus 5.0

I received a question today from someone who wanted to know the difference for isolation detection between vSphere 5.0 and 5.1. I described this in our book, but I figured I would share it here as well. Note that this is an outtake from the book. The isolation detection mechanism has changed substantially since previous versions of vSphere. The main difference is the fact that HA triggers a master election process before it will declare a host is isolated. In this timeline, “s” refers to seconds. The following timeline is the...
