Cool Tool: VisualEsxtop
My ESXTOP page is still one of the most visited pages I have, it actually comes in on a second spot just right after the HA Deepdive. Every once in a while I revise the page and this week it was time to add VisualEsxtop to the list of tools people should use. I figured I would write a regular blog post first and roll it up in to the page at the same time. So what is VisualEsxtop?
VisualEsxtop is an enhanced version of resxtop and esxtop. VisualEsxtop can connect to VMware vCenter Server or ESX hosts, and display ESX server stats...

VMware plans to deploy security inside ESX in 2011
eWeek Magazine published an article about how VMware plans to deploy security inside the Hypervisor in 2011. Allwyn Sequeira, who is Chief Technical Officer for VMware ‘s Security and Network Solutions divisions told a group of technical writers and analysts that security for applications deployed in cloud systems needs to be built into the hypervisor itself and not reside independently in the stack.
"…When security is automated within the hypervisor — thus untouched by humans — data is going to be far better protected. This... [Lire la suite]

ESX 4.1 sera le dernier avec un COS ...
ESX 4.1 is the Last ESX! What Do I Do Now?VMware shipped ESX Server 1.0 way back in 2001. While the word “Server” was lost over time, another bigger thing was not: the Console Operating System (a.k.a. Service Console or COS), a Linux instance that facilitated local management operations. While this administrative environment had an important role early on when centralized management with vCenter Server wasn’t as common as today, it also introduced overhead and made our platform less secure and robust as it could have been without... Workaround for: ESX(i) 4.1 Password Issue
As many of you already know there is an issue with the encryption mechanism of ESX(i) 4.1. When passwords are used which are longer than 8 characters the password will be truncated after the 8th character. As such during authentication only the first 8 characters are used. In other words if you have a 10 character password you will only need to type the first 8 characters correct and the rest can be completely random.
The KB article that was published yesterday contains a workaround to change this behaviour. I recommend...
