Using vCenter Converter to create VMware ESXi virtual machines

Administrators considering VMware ESXi may wonder if vCenter Converter will workfor VMware ESXi conversions. The answer is yes, but there’s a gotcha. Converting a physical machine into an ESXi virtual machine works best when you use the latest version of VMware Converter, version 3.0.3. While prior releases, such as 3.0.2 had support for ESXi, it has improved greatly with the updated 3.0.3 release. ESXi has a more updated version as well, version 3.5 Update 3. Likewise, if you are using PlateSpin’s PowerConvert or Vizioncore’s... [Lire la suite]

Backing up and managing VMware ESX virtual machines with VM Explorer

Recently I came across a tool from TriLead called VM Explorer. They offer a free version of their full product, and I love free VMware tools, so I tried it out. I learned that VM Explorer, also called VMX, does more than let you explore your virtual environment – in fact, the pro version is a viable alternative to VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) for smaller companies running VMware ESX. VMX has a GUI interface, a job scheduler, can copy directly to a NAS or SAN, and offers features like task history, email on completion of... [Lire la suite]

How VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant bridges the ESXi management gap

The VMware ESX service console is used to run scripts and load third-party applications so that you can manage your ESX host systems and virtual infrastructure. VMware ESXi, however, doesn't have a service console. VMware has created Virtual Infrastructure Management Assistant (VIMA) to fill that gap. VIMA also provides an avenue for centralized scripting for VMware ESX servers – a much needed feature. Fortunately, VIMA is free and easy to install if you have proper instructions. What is the VMware Infrastructure Management... [Lire la suite]

Two options for installing the VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant (pour ESX3i)

VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant (VIMA) streamlines VMware ESXi management by acting as a service console. VIMA is a virtual appliance used for centralized scripting, centralized command execution and centralized third-party application installations in VMware environments; it's a command-line interface-only Linux server that allows you to run all the typical vicfg-xxxx commands, across all ESX hosts, with no authentication. VIMA also provides centralized log consolidation for ESX servers. In the second part of this two-part...
