Dynamic Memory Pro Tip – be reasonable with your startup ram

Hyper-V now allows you to configure a startup, minimum and maximum memory limit.  If you are like me – you probably leave the startup ram at the default of 512mb – but you should really consider changing it to better suit your environment.  Here is a quick screenshot from one of my Hyper-V servers: Two things that I have discovered: Some of my virtual machines benefit from having a startup and minimum that is below 512mb.  My FTP server, for instance, is a core installation of Windows server which just acts as an... Last week I posted about how you can now use Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2012 to backup virtual machines.  One of the first questions that people had was “how do I do this from the command-line?”  So – let me show you! The tool you will want to use is “wbadmin.exe” Backing up a virtual machine is fairly straight forward.  Your command will look like this: wbadmin start backup –backupTarget:<location to backup to> –hyperv:<list of virtual machines to backup> --> Please see the rest on the... How To Back Up Hyper-V VMs Natively in Windows Server 2012

Did you know that with Windows Server 2012 you can now backup Hyper-V VMs with very little effort and very little configuration? Now, I'm not recommending that you throw out your existing enterprise backup system and standardize on Windows Server Backup in 2012, especially if you are using products like System Center Data Protection Manager (which is fantastic for backup) or Veeam or others. But, in a pinch Windows Server 2012's backup is quite handy. Before you can use Windows Server Backup, you must add that feature from Server... [Lire la suite]

The Case of the Unexplained Windows Server 2012 Replica Kerberos Error : 0x8009030C 0x00002EFE

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Replica is a new feature that replicates all changes on a virtual machine to a counterpart virtual machine hosted by a different server. Replica overview and deployment considerations can be found here. This feature is well documented so I'll skip setup and installation and strictly focus on troubleshooting. I received a call from one of my customers who was trying to evaluate this feature for a disaster recovery scenario in test. Unfortunately, any time he attempted to enable this feature an exception was... [Lire la suite]
