Will VMware give away VMotion and HA for free?

The virtualization wars heated up again last week when Microsoft announced that the next release of Hyper-V will include Live Migration, its version of VMotion, and High Availability (HA) features for free. Currently, these features are not included for free in VMware’s free edition of ESXi; VMotion is only available in the Advanced and Enterprise versions of vSphere; and HA is included in all but the free and the low-end Essentials edition. This just serves as further proof that Microsoft is desperate to catch up with VMware and win... [Lire la suite]

VMware Converter 4 – Linux Migration Issue

I have been performing a fair few P2Vs recently and came across an interesting issue with VMware vCenter Converter v4.0.0 Build 146302 when virtualising a Redhat 4 server over to our ESX environment. I’m adding it here as something to keep an eye out for as its not visible straight away so please double check this after your linux migrations. The issue we had was that after a successful migration through the converter wizard we were unable to access some of our websites hosted on the linux server, I raised this with VMware and... Virtual Server to Hyper-V Migration Guide

For users who want to move virtual machines from Virtual Server to Hyper-V there are two resources you should be aware of. Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.1 !!!!

Microsoft has just released and updated version of this great tool. FSMT offers a step-by-step process, simplifying the task of migrating file services. It provides the necessary tools to help minimize the impact to users, resulting in a more manageable environment. The main reason for this updated release is support for Windows Server 2008. I've already used the beta version on several projects, where customers where migrating to Windows Server 2008. Read more about this great utility... [Lire la suite]
