Fling: PXE Manager for vCenter
It is finally released… PXE Manager for vCenter. My former Cloud colleague Max Daneri of VMTS fame has worked very very hard on this and actually demoed it at VMworld in 2009. I know Max is already working on the next release which of course will work with the upcoming vSphere version as well. So if you’ve tested it and have feedback don’t forget to leave a comment on labs.vmware.com.
PXE Manager for vCenter enables ESXi host state (firmware) management and provisioning. Specifically, it allows:
Automated provisioning of new ESXi... [Lire la suite]

Diskless server boot using the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target and a regular network card
The new Microsoft iSCSI Software Target 3.3 is commonly deployed to provide data storage for servers that boot from a local hard drive. However, there are interesting cost savings and management advantages in deploying servers that have no local disk at all and get their syste and boot volumes from the iSCSI target. The iSCSI Target team has worked closely with the Windows HPC Server team to enable this specific solution, common in HPC environments.
Jian Yan, the Program Manager for the iSCSI Software Target, has a new blog post on... [Lire la suite]

Windows XP Migration to Windows 7 RC using MDT Beta 1 - Part 1: The OS Install
In part 1 of this 2-part series, Jeremy Chapman shows how a Windows XP computer with user files and settings can be migrated to Windows 7 RC. If you recall, we did this a few months back in an interview with Jeremy and the whole process using hard-link migration took about 30 minutes, installed the applications we selected and migrated more than 20GB of user state from Windows XP to Windows 7. This video is a screen capture walking through an updated migration to Windows 7 RC. The second part of this video series will show how this... [Lire la suite]

August 9th, 2008 by Chris
For the past couple weeks, I have had the pleasure of working closely with VMware Corporate Architect Lance Berc while testing his ESXi hypervisor PXE boot solution. There’s been plenty of good solutions for PXE installing the ESX hypervisor. In...
