Bulk Registering Virtual Machines with PowerShell

I recently rebuilt a Hyper-V server – where all of my virtual machines were shutdown first and stored on a secondary disk.  Once I had finished installing the operating system and had Hyper-V up and running – I wondered what the most efficient way to get the virtual machines all reconnected would be.  I ended up using PowerShell to do a bulk import; however this did involve a bit of experimentation to get right. The first thing I had to deal with was the fact that our “import-VM” command requires that you provide a .XML... [Lire la suite]

Attempting to Sysprep a Virtual Machine with IE10 fails

We just received word from one of our support engineers working on the front-lines that some customers are reporting problems wherein Sysprep fails on Virtual Machines that have IE10 on them. The issue is not a VMware bug, it’s an Registry location problem, but customers might still reach for the phone to call us first. We thought we’d try and get the word out today to try and save you some steps (and time). The problem manifests itself when you attempt to Sysprep a Virtual Machine that has IE10 on it.  In the Sysprep... [Lire la suite]

Backing up Hyper-V virtual machines from the command line

Last week I posted about how you can now use Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2012 to backup virtual machines.  One of the first questions that people had was “how do I do this from the command-line?”  So – let me show you! The tool you will want to use is “wbadmin.exe” Backing up a virtual machine is fairly straight forward.  Your command will look like this: wbadmin start backup –backupTarget:<location to backup to> –hyperv:<list of virtual machines to backup> --> Please see the rest on the... Release: Trilead VM Explorer 4.1

Trilead has released version 4.1 of its backup solution for Virtual Machines VM Explorer. VM Explorer Backups can be stored on ESX, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD based storage platforms or directly to a SAN. With the release of version 4 Trilead expanded support from VMware to Hyper-V as well, a trend we see with more vendors which traditionally provided VMware-ended solutions. VM explorer is offered in a Free edition, and a Pro edition which of course has more features as detailed here.   Version 4.1 provides the following new... [Lire la suite]

Virtual Machines Fail to Start with Error 0x80070569

We have received some reports from people who are seeing an error 0x80070569 when they try to start or live migrate virtual machines on Windows Server 2012. After some investigation we have found that this is usually caused by the use of a custom group policy setting in their domain. We have written a KB article that explains how to work around this issue if you see it in your environment: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779204 Cheers, Ben --> Please see the rest on Ben's Blog... Run KVM virtual machines on hardware with real performance

There’s nothing worse than trying to run a workload on a hardware-bottlenecked system. Release the power of KVM with IBM System x servers. You can run virtualization host software on just about any kind of hardware. But why would you if you’re an existing Red Hat customer? Almost a year ago, I wrote, “Big Blue plus Red Hat plus Private Cloud equals Purple Reign?,” which was an analysis of the team-up between Red Hat and IBM to create a new public cloud offering that I called, Purple Reign. Now, there’s something new on the horizon... [Lire la suite]

Free ESXi Hypervisor - Auto Start Breaks with 5.0 Update 1

If you are running the free version of ESXi (aka ESXi Hypervisor) then you'll want to be aware of a critical issue that surfaces after upgrading to 5.0 Update 1. I want to stress this only applies to people runing the free ESXi version. If you're ESXi hosts are licensed this issue does not affect you. There were some changes made in the way the ESXi APIs are accessed in Update 1 that unfortunately breaks the VM Auto Start feature in the free ESXi version. Please note that this issue only affects the free ESXi version and it was not... [Lire la suite]
