How To Back Up Hyper-V VMs Natively in Windows Server 2012

Did you know that with Windows Server 2012 you can now backup Hyper-V VMs with very little effort and very little configuration? Now, I'm not recommending that you throw out your existing enterprise backup system and standardize on Windows Server Backup in 2012, especially if you are using products like System Center Data Protection Manager (which is fantastic for backup) or Veeam or others. But, in a pinch Windows Server 2012's backup is quite handy. Before you can use Windows Server Backup, you must add that feature from Server... [Lire la suite]

How to migrate the DHCP service to Windows 2012

One of my customers asked me to dismiss an old Windows 2003 R2 server which is running the DHCP service for a bunch of workstations and to replace it with a new Windows 2012 server we installed last December.Seen the fact that this DHCP service is configured with many options and a lot of reservations, and that I am totally lazy about recreating all these settings manually, I found a way to dump its configuration to a text file and to import it back to Windows 2012.Let's start exporting the DHCP database from the server that... Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Replica is a new feature that replicates all changes on a virtual machine to a counterpart virtual machine hosted by a different server. Replica overview and deployment considerations can be found here. This feature is well documented so I'll skip setup and installation and strictly focus on troubleshooting. I received a call from one of my customers who was trying to evaluate this feature for a disaster recovery scenario in test. Unfortunately, any time he attempted to enable this feature an exception was... [Lire la suite]

Top 5 Windows 8 Enterprise Features

I've already written a fair amount about Windows 8 and my experiences with Microsoft's latest client OS, and have presented some reasons why you should and shouldn't deploy it. Of all the various editions of Windows 8, the one that admins should be most concerned about is Windows 8 Enterprise, the volume-licensed version of Windows 8 that most organizations with more than five PCs will likely deploy. If you want to deploy Windows 8 Enterprise, you'll also need to be a Microsoft Software Assurance (SA) --> please see the rest on... [Lire la suite]

VMware vSphere 5.x supports Windows Server 2012 cloning and snapshot

Microsoft introduced a feature in Windows Server 2012 which enables snapshots to be reverted on Active Directory Domain Controllers without corrupting the Active Directory. This feature called VM-Generation ID also allows cloning of Active Directory running on virtual machines. VMware vSphere 5.1 does support this feature since its release but I have not read a lot of information on it. Only recently VMware wrote a blogposting titled Windows Server 2012 VM-Generation ID Support in vSphere about the support. --> Please... [Lire la suite]
