Changing Password on Administrator Accounts - Performing an Audit

This article addresses a common task which many administrators have to address within their career as as an IT professional - changing the password on a core administrator account.ScenarioIt is well known that Administrators should always create dedicated service accounts with appropriate access to be used by network applications on a Microsoft network.  However there is always a case of a lazy administrator in the past who could not be bothered to create dedicated service accounts so they use the default domain admin account... Isolation detection in vSphere 5.1 versus 5.0

I received a question today from someone who wanted to know the difference for isolation detection between vSphere 5.0 and 5.1. I described this in our book, but I figured I would share it here as well. Note that this is an outtake from the book. The isolation detection mechanism has changed substantially since previous versions of vSphere. The main difference is the fact that HA triggers a master election process before it will declare a host is isolated. In this timeline, “s” refers to seconds. The following timeline is the... Exchange 2010 SP2 AD Schema Changes…

Microsoft has released a word document which explains all the AD schema changes for Exchange 2010 SP2 to install and work properly. Download the doc here. To my surprise, the same doc has all the AD schema changes for Exchange 2007 & 2003. Though the doc is only 1mb in size, it is packaged in an msi file, which needs to be installed. --> Please see the rest on the blog : http://www.howexchangeworks.com/2011/11/exchange-2010-sp2-ad-schema-changes.html

Licensing Revised in vSphere 5 (vRAM caps raised)

So just when I thought I was done with my last vSphere 5 licensing post, VMware surprised us all pleasantly. Yes, just recently today my inbox brought me the good news. I was in a middle of troubleshooting an issue when immediately the whole universe was shocked with the news.  Yes VMware has revised there vSphere 5 licensing model. Here is the new revised pdf. Though I had zero influence in this decision I would like to point out that I did talk about increasing vRAM entitlements... [Lire la suite]

Setting SMTP Banner In Exchange 2010…

All Exchange admins are familiar with the SMTP banner. It is the response received by a remote server after it connects to the receive connector of an Exchange 2010 Hub or Edge server. If the SMTP banner is not set on a receive connector, the default response will have the fqdn of the server, along with the information that the server in use is a Microsoft one. Below is the default response from my telnet client. As the internal information becomes visible to outside servers, exchange admins tend to change it. I have seen... [Lire la suite]

Changes to virtual machine snapshots in Windows Server 2008 R2

In Windows Server 2008 R2 we have made some surgical changes to the way virtual machine snapshots work and how they are exposed in the system in order to address some key customer pain points.  Changes include: You can now export a single snapshot from a virtual machine.  This works by selecting the snapshot in question and then selecting Export… from the Action pane.  We will merge all the snapshot disk data into a single new virtual hard disk – and the resulting exported virtual machine will look like a virtual...
