Multiple vCenter Servers, SSO, and How To Design for Failure

Internally within my company, there is usually a lot of discussion about how a customer goes about managing multiple vCenter servers. With the vSphere 5.1 addition of Single Sign-On (SSO), it dramatically complicates the design itself. This topic won't mean much for SMBs because you should be pretty well off with a single vCenter and SSO instance. This is primarily going to be focused on large enterprise designs.   WARNING::: these are MY design considerations and recommendations, use at your own risk. All depicted... [Lire la suite]

I am happy to announce the availability of the VMware Network Virtualization Design Guide. This guide provides an overview of the key attributes of network virtualization technology. Then the paper discusses different components of VMware’s Network virtualization solution and explains VXLAN in detail. Finally, the design considerations section discusses couple of real life deployments and provides guidelines on how to prepare VXLAN fabric. On top of this VXLAN fabric, customers can now create and delete logical Layer 2 networks... [Lire la suite]

vShield App and layering your design

started diving in to vShield App and one thing that I like about vShield App is that it allows you to use different types of objects to apply your policies to. Never really put too much thought in to it, but considering the world is more and more changing to policy based management this fits right in. I just wanted to share something that I was working on, any feedback / thoughts are welcome… The VMware Cloud Infrastructure aims to reduce operational overhead and lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by simplifying management... Using the vSphere Plan & Design Kit

As part of my role I very often review design documents that other consultants/architect have written, and not only those of VMware employees but also from external people. On top of that of course I also see a lot of VCDX application packages pass by. Something struck me the other day when I was doing the 3rd review in just a couple of hours and I started thinking about the designs I had reviewed so far and noticed there was a common theme. Before I get started I want to make sure everyone understands that I believe there’s a very... [Lire la suite]

Points To Note While Designing Database Availability Group…

I had covered the topic of what to look for before creating a DAG in one of my previous article. In this one, I am going to highlight the facts you need to consider while designing a Database Availability Group. Without going over the DAG feature again, let me list the points to note. Each member of the DAG must be running the same operating system. It is not supported to add an Exchange 2010 mailbox server that is also a directory server to a DAG. A DAG can contain a mix of servers running Exchange 2010 Standard and Enterprise...
