vSphere 5.1 Performance History issue!
I was just made aware of this issue with the vSphere 5.1 performance history charts. The symptoms are straight forward:
You see only the last 30 days of performance history in the ‘past year’ view
Only one month of performance history appears when trying to see the past year
VMware is working on a solution for the problem currently. It seems the problem has been identified (stored procedure purging data) and hopefully a fix will be released soon.

vCenter Server 5.1.0b released
I was doing some testing with vCenter Server 5.1.0b this Wednesday and Thursday and just noticed it was released today. Those who were experiencing time-out issues with the web client or were unable to login to the web client using a non-standard UPN as an AD user will want to check this release out.
Full release notes can be found here. I did the upgrade using the upgrade repository iso: VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.1.0.5300-947940-updaterepo.iso. Very useful if you do not have direct access to the internet from your vCenter... [Lire la suite]

Isolation detection in vSphere 5.1 versus 5.0
I received a question today from someone who wanted to know the difference for isolation detection between vSphere 5.0 and 5.1. I described this in our book, but I figured I would share it here as well. Note that this is an outtake from the book.
The isolation detection mechanism has changed substantially since previous versions of vSphere. The main difference is the fact that HA triggers a master election process before it will declare a host is isolated. In this timeline, “s” refers to seconds. The following timeline is the... Learning PowerCLI–What does it take ?
One of the most asked questions to me at VMworld this year was “what does it take to learn PowerCLI”, lots of people have seen the fantastic things you can do with PowerCLI, where it is drawing your infrastructure out into Visio or checking your VMware environment for potential issues.
I always tell people that if I can learn PowerCLI then anyone can, one of the great strengths of PowerCLI and PowerShell is that it was written for System Administrators, for the people who need to get the job done, get it done fast and move on to the... [Lire la suite]

Release: Trilead VM Explorer 4.1
Trilead has released version 4.1 of its backup solution for Virtual Machines VM Explorer. VM Explorer Backups can be stored on ESX, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD based storage platforms or directly to a SAN. With the release of version 4 Trilead expanded support from VMware to Hyper-V as well, a trend we see with more vendors which traditionally provided VMware-ended solutions.
VM explorer is offered in a Free edition, and a Pro edition which of course has more features as detailed here.
Version 4.1 provides the following new... [Lire la suite]

Symantec admits all its VMware backup customers are in danger
Modern Architecture Wins Every Time: Veeam Customers Unaffected
Last week Symantec published a blog post scaring all VMware customers about backups on vSphere 5.1. In this post they made insinuations that backup vendors claiming support for vSphere 5.1 were misleading their customers and putting them into unsafe recoverability conditions. While we’d like to think that Symantec did this as a service to their customers, we believe this is just another example of a Symantec trying to use scare tactics against their biggest... How to create a vSphere Web Client Google Chrome Application Shortcut, looks better and works faster
Don’t like that enormous waste of space your browser takes for tabs, URLs, and bookmarks, when trying to get used to the new VMware vSphere Web Client GUI? When vSphere 5.1 is released next Tuesday, September 11th, why not try to get used to the browser interface as well? Consider using Chrome’s way of “App-iffying” your browser-based client. See for yourself. Finally, Chrome works, and it appears to me to be the fastest, a claim also made in a wonderfully detailed article, with UI elements clearly illustrated, over here.
