Release: VMware ThinApp 4.6
A couple of weeks before VMworld (see virtualization.info live coverage), VMware released a new minor update for its application virtualization platform ThinApp.
Despite the version number, ThinApp 4.6 (build 287958) introduces major new components and capabilities:
Converter (a P2V migration tool that automates creation of ThinApp packages)
ThinReg (allows to execute virtualized services at operating system boot time and expose to non-virtualized applications)
ThinDirect (allows to associate specific web pages to... [Lire la suite]

Parent memory reserve with dynamic memory
Most people I know who have spent a lot of time with Hyper-V have had the experience of accidentally taking too much memory away from the parent partition. This happens when they start too many virtual machines – and all of a sudden the performance and responsiveness of the parent partition goes down significantly.
The response from people who hit this is usually to stop the last virtual machine that they started, to reduce its memory, and then start it up again.
This solution has worked in the past – but is no longer an...

Guest Paging vs. Virtualization Paging and Negative Memory Availability
Jeff has discussed this at some length over on the virtualization team blog, but as a general rule of thumb we believe that it is much better to have paging occur inside the guest operating system rather than at the virtualization layer (if paging is needed).
The simple reason for this is that the guest operating system has far better understanding of which are the best sections of memory to page out – where as all the virtualization layer can do is to guess at what should be paged out.
In my recent demonstrations of dynamic... [Lire la suite]

VMware View 4.5: Ready for the Large Enterprise
Today at VMworld North America, VMware announced the availability of VMware View 4.5. The View 4.5 Premier release represents a significant milestone as it places VMware is very select company with Citrix as the only two vendors that offer enterprise-ready server-hosted virtual desktop (SHVD) solutions.
For us to consider View 4.5 enterprise-ready, it had to meet all requirements in the Burton Group Server Hosted Virtual Desktop evaluation criteria.
The evaluation criteria was developed over a five month period. During that... [Lire la suite]
