Physical or Appliance – Upgrading to vCenter Server 5.1
The other day we received this question from a customer via Twitter:
@VMwareCares planning to upgrade to 5.1 from 5.0 vcenter. What’s recommended physical or appliance? Ups and downs side of each?
We thought a few more of you might have the same questions so we decided we would take the opportunity to explain the differences between vCenter server and vCenter appliance and under what situation which one should be opted for, over the other.
The vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) is a preconfigured Linux-based... [Lire la suite]

Comparison: VMware, Microsoft, Citrix and Red Hat Virtualization Matrix
In January this year, we reported about the extensive community work of Andreas Groth comparing the virtualization features of different virtualization platform vendors. The Virtualization Matrix received an update this week, now including Red Hat’s KVM solution in the comparison. Andreas also updated Citrix to version 6.1 with data from CloudPlatform and updated VMware with its latest Horizon Suite announcement.

vSphere 5.1 – VMDK versus RDM
It seems the debate between using a VMDK on VMFS or an RDM still rages when it comes to the question which one is better for performance.
The VMware team has published a lot of evidence in the past that the difference is very minor, in fact difficult to measure accurately and probably unperceivable to customers. Definitely not worth giving up the value of encapsulating a VM.

Exchange sur VMWare : RDM or not RDM ? That is the question...

Windows 8 Release Preview vs. Windows 7: Benchmarked
Can Microsoft’s upcoming operating system keep up with — or even beat — Windows 7, or does Microsoft still have work to do?
It’s time to see how Microsoft’s newly released Windows 8 Release Preview stacks up against Windows 7. Can the upcoming operating system keep up with — or even beat — Windows 7, or does Microsoft still have work to do?
Unlike the time where I benchmarked the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, where I ran into troubles with graphics card drivers issues and problems getting consistent results from a couple of the... [Lire la suite]

Surprising results FC/NFS/iSCSI/FCoE…
I received a preliminary copy of a this report a couple of weeks ago, but since then nothing has changed. NetApp took the time to compare FC against, FCoE, iSCSI and NFS. Like most of us, probably, I still had the VI3 mindset and expected that FC would come out on top. Fact of the matter is that everything is so close, the differences are neglectable and tr-3916 shows that regardless of the type of data access protocol used you can get the same mileage. I am glad NetApp took the time to test these scenarios and used various test... [Lire la suite]

Comparison of Outlook 2010, OWA 2010 and Outlook 2011 Features
With the recent release of Office 2011 for the Mac, Outlook makes a welcome return, spearheading the way toward full feature parity between Outlook on Windows and Mac. Finally, will your Mac users will be able to do everything their Windows counterparts can? Is Outlook 2011 for Mac just an improvement on Entourage 2008 EWS edition, and will Mac users need something like VMware Fusion plus Outlook 2010 to gain all the features they need for full interoperability with Exchange?
And with OWA becoming truly cross-platform, does this... [Lire la suite]
